CVS Files with USPTO for Crypto Collectibles and NFT Trademarks

Metaverse was first coined in 1992 by Neal Stephenson in his novel titled Snow Crash. Little did anyone know at that time about the kind of hype it would gain after 30 years. The realistic digital world now exists, with many players working to improve it further.

Next, many brands are keen on joining it by showcasing their products and/or services in the metaverse. The latest one to join the list is CVS. The corporation was founded on May 08, 1963. Almost a 60-years old company is ready to take on the youthful world of the metaverse.

Trademark Filings Of CVS

CVS, an American retail and pharmacy corporation, has registered a series of Trademark filings with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, also known as USPTO. As per the details available, the filings talk about CVS branded downloadable virtual goods and crypto-collectibles.

The Trademark filings were registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on February 28, 2022. They were published on March 04, 2022.

Numbered 97287237, the registered Trademark filings throw some light on a number of concepts like non-fungible tokens and other virtual items.

Section 1(a) of the filings mentions downloadable virtual goods and general merchandise for use online and in the virtual world. The category of downloadable virtual goods includes items like consumer goods, health, prescription drugs, wellness, personal care products, and beauty products.

Section 1(b) of the filings talk on a similar line. It mentions digital assets and digital collectibles that will be sold in the form of non-fungible tokens.

Through the concept of the non-fungible token, CVS aims to provide several things in the digital world. This includes:

  • Digital artwork and images
  • Application tokens and non-fungible tokens used on software as a service
  • Making non-downloadable digital media like digital collectibles, digital assets, non-fungible tokens, and digital tokens for use temporarily.
  • We are providing application tokens and Crypto-collectibles accessible on the platform as a service.

CVS approaching the United States Patent and Trademark Office to register for Trademark follows a trend of other brands like McDonald’s, Puma, Walmart, Crocs, and New Balance.

McDonald’s had filed for a metaverse-related trademark in the middle of February 2022, while Walmart had done the same during the middle of January 2022. Other companies filed for a Trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in recent times.

The pattern of every major brand filing for Metaverse-related trademark signals that the industry is meant to strengthen the entertainment and amusement factor of it while also emphasizing on use in virtual environment ideology.

Josh Gerben, the trademark lawyer, had said during McDonald’s trademark filing that it was a possibility to see every major brand doing the same in the next 12 months. It seems that the statement is turning out to be true. Many more brands have lined up to join the exciting new digital world on the internet.
