HBKU Joins Hands with IBM to Allow Students to Learn New-Age Technologies

Taking pride in being Doha’s reputed public university, the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) has broadcasted the news of its collaboration with tech giant IBM to kickstart its flagship initiative, the IBM Skills Academy programme. The team-up is focused on enriching the students with an outstanding opportunity to delve into the critical pedagogies of the new innovative and fast-emerging technologies. The programme will be focused on future-oriented skills like cloud, data science, analytics, blockchain technology, AI, cybersecurity, etc.

The strategic partnership was announced during the Qatar IT Conference and Exhibition 2019. Eminent personalities present during the announcement included HBKU’s Dr Mounir Hamdi, who serves as the dean of the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) and Mejdi El Khater, country manager of IBM Qatar. There were other chiefs of HBKU and IBM, as well.

“Technology is transforming jobs and skills at a rapid rate across industries. Ensuring that we equip youth and future talent with the skills employers will demand is becoming more important than ever, and this is where IBM Skills Academy comes into play. The IBM Skills Academy programme is designed specifically to bridge the skills gap between the University and the real business world,” said El Khater.

According to the announcement, the partnership will give the HBKU students a crucial chance to learn new critical digital skills, enhance their employability potential, and imbibe in them the spirit of entrepreneurship so that they can aid economic growth. The career-focused online courses and the classroom-oriented training of the programme are designed in a way to aid the university students in a big way.

Dr. Hamdi shared his views on the collaboration by quoting that “Technology and education today complement each other in unprecedented ways, and this is observed as the world steadily migrates towards digitized learning programmes. CSE is at the forefront of these needs by offering an experiential education that is both applicable and forward-looking. Our collaboration with IBM is a reinforcement of this technologized paradigm and in-tune approach to learning.”

HBKU has been actively partnering with local as well as international entities for aiding the development process in Qatar by opening doors for learning new-age technologies. The institute offers 36 high-ranked courses at the graduate, post-graduate, and doctoral levels. These courses are designed to provide expertise to the students in rendering their services for national, regional, and global demands.
