The Government of Malta Goes On to Award Blockchain Scholarships to 19 Students

According to recent reports published on 23rd May 2019 by Malta’s local publication called Malta Independent, The Government of Malta has awarded as many as 19 students with the coveted blockchain scholarships. The scholarships in total are worth about 179,000 dollars (approximately 160 thousand euro). The scholarship announcements were made during the Malta AI and Blockchain Summit that is presently going on at the European country.

It was Silvio Schembri who granted all the 19 scholarships utilizing the August 2018 scholarship fund, amounting to 351,000 dollars, set aside by the University of Malta and the MDIA (short for Malta Digital Innovation Authority). For those who are unaware, Schembri is active at the post of Parliamentary Secretary for the Financial Services, Digital Economy and Innovation department.

As per Schembri, these scholarships are the first such awards that Malta has witnessed. Apart from that, the Parliamentary Secretary also revealed that the Malta Financial Services Authority, widely referred to as the MFSA, will also be issuing the very first licenses to companies active in blockchain industry this year. Schembri also brought to notice the fact that Malta, at the end of the previous year, had a total of 800 blockchain companies operating from its region.

Malta Independent further reported that the scholarships will allow all the 19 awardees to apply for Master’s degree program in DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) as well as the blockchain technology. Students would be able to pursue their blockchain study specialization about finance, law, ICT, and business with the scholarships.

In the previous month, the MFSA went on to approve 14 digital asset agents from the long list of 250+ applicants. The approval came after the Virtual Financial Assets Act was adopted, which was administered by the Authorities of Malta in last year’s summer.
