Tether’s gold-backed token, XAU₮, has been officially recognized as compliant with Islamic banking standards. The endorsement comes from Amanah Advisors under the guidance of Mufti Faraz Adam. This decision confirms that the token meets the fundamental Sharia standards of ownership, transparency, and non-prohibited elements.

Historical Role of Gold and the Digital Link

The Muslim tradition of using gold as a medium for preserving value dates back over fourteen centuries. Meanwhile, the world’s financial systems are undergoing digital adoption. XAU₮ tries to bridge this gap by assigning every token to a given amount of physical gold at safe vaults in Switzerland. The holders do not get a paper promise or derivative contract, but direct ownership of the metal. The arrangement excludes interest charges, borrowed funds, and instruments designed for speculation.

XAU₮ Conditions Confirmed in the Certification

Certification rests on several verified conditions.

  • Physical Possession: The issuing entity, TG Commodities, S.A. de C.V., physically holds the gold.
  • Auditability: Reserves are fully transparent and available for verification.
  • No Interest: The financial structure contains no interest (riba) component.
  • No Leverage: The system excludes leverage and synthetic products.
  • Full Disclosure: Asset backing remains completely transparent.

These points align the token with established prohibitions against riba and excessive uncertainty.

Position Within Islamic Finance and Digital Assets

Islamic finance continues to expand as one of the more rapidly growing areas of global capital markets. Gold has cultural and functional significance in many places where there’s a high Muslim population. Until recently, there were only a few digital gold coins that were also in compliance with religious standards. Thus, the present certification bridges a gap between the traditional asset preferences and the current blockchain systems.

“Gold has always represented stability and trust across cultures and generations,” said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether. “With XAU₮ now recognized as Shariah compliant, we are expanding access to digital gold in a way that respects Islamic finance principles while leveraging the transparency and efficiency of blockchain technology.”

Potential Applications for XAU₮

Some of the potential applications include Islamic banks’ offerings, takaful products and endorsed savings products, use as collateral in trade-related transactions, and allocation under longer-term wealth management products. Since the token is a representation of real metal as opposed to a synthetic claim, it maintains the characteristics that have been historically considered acceptable under Islamic principles.

Expected Regional Focus

The geographical interest should be initially directed towards the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, where Islamic finance structures are in place at scale. Further interest could be witnessed in certain parts of South Asia and Africa, where gold has traditionally been a well-known place to save and where digital financial tools are being adopted. International centres, which have dedicated Islamic finance centres, may also review the token for institutional portfolios.

Continued Collaboration and Information

Amanah Advisors plans to continue providing its services to Tether beyond the first certification. The partnership will be discussing practical issues when the token is moved on to the secondary markets, such as governance standards and guidelines. Tether will be providing explanatory content in several languages and regional promotions to institutional and individual participants to accompany the process.

Broader Implications

The development is an example of one way blockchain representations of real assets can fit existing ethics and legal limitations. Whether broader adoption follows will depend on regulatory clarity, market demand, and continued adherence to the standards now formally recognized.

More broadly, the case demonstrates how the tokenization of commodities can be designed to not include attributes which have traditionally made many digital instruments unsuitable for Islamic finance. Meanwhile, it highlights that compliance isn’t a single occurrence. Continuous monitoring, clear reporting, and governance structures will need to be in place to sustain the token’s position as it continues to scale.
