OpenAI CPO: 99% Code Automation by 2025

OpenAI CPO: AI Will Achieve 99% Code Automation In 2025

OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, Kevin Weil, recently shared that AI will achieve 99% code automation as ChatGPT-5 will be released soon. While he declined to provide a specific release date, he assured listeners, “GPT-5 will appear very soon. We are already working on this very seriously.”

OpenAI Will Achieve 99% Code Automation in 2025

In addition to this, Weil made a bold claim regarding AI’s capabilities, stating that 99% of code automation will be achieved within this year. He firmly rejected predictions that this milestone would be delayed until 2027, commenting, “At the rate we’re going, I would be surprised if it’s 2027. I think it’s going to happen sooner.”

Weil’s remarks come in response to a prediction from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who predicted that AI would be responsible for writing 90% of all code within the next 3-6 months, with the potential to automate nearly all coding tasks within a year.

In the same interview on the Overpowered podcast, Weil noted, “GPT-3, which is coming soon, is already the 175th best competitive coder in the world. And as we begin training its successor models, they are already outperforming GPT-3.”

Looking ahead, Weil sees 2025 as an important year. “I believe this is the year that, at least in terms of competitive coding benchmarks, AI will surpass humans in competitive coding for good,” he explained. “Much like how computers surpassed humans in multiplication 70 years ago and AI overtook humans in chess 15 years ago, this is the year AI will be better than humans at programming — and there’s no turning back.”

ChatGPT to Replace Gemini as Android’s Default AI

In another development, OpenAI launched a new feature allowing ChatGPT to replace Google’s Gemini as the default digital assistant on Android devices, with its recent beta update (v1.2025.070). This long-awaited feature makes it easier for users to launch ChatGPT using system-wide shortcuts, giving it the same level of accessibility as Google’s native AI assistant.

Until now, Android’s open ecosystem allowed multiple digital assistants, but only Google’s Gemini could be triggered using default navigation gestures and buttons. But, with this new update, Android users can now invoke ChatGPT just as easily as they would Google’s assistant.
