OpenAI May Lower ChatGPT Fees for India Users

OpenAI Considers Lowering ChatGPT Subscription Fees in India

OpenAI is considering a significant reduction in the subscription cost for ChatGPT in India, with potential prices ranging from $3 to $5 per month. This move could cut the current $20 fee by as much as 85%, making the service more affordable to a broader range of users.

The company is also in talks with Reliance Industries about a strategic partnership. If successful, the collaboration could see Reliance’s subsidiary, Jio, distributing ChatGPT services across India. Additionally, there are discussions about hosting OpenAI’s models locally within India, which would address data sovereignty concerns and improve AI accessibility.

India has become an increasingly important market for OpenAI, with CEO Sam Altman noting that the country is the company’s second-largest market. Last year, OpenAI saw its user base triple in India. While ChatGPT’s basic version is free, the premium ChatGPT Plus plan, which offers access to advanced features like GPT-4.5, is currently priced at $20 per month (approximately ₹1,720).

The proposed price cut, though not officially confirmed in relation to the ongoing talks with Reliance, would make ChatGPT much more accessible. This move is also aimed at the growing trend in the tech industry to democratize access to AI technologies, making them more affordable and widespread.

In addition to the pricing shift, Reliance is exploring the possibility of offering OpenAI’s models to its enterprise clients through an API. The conglomerate is also considering hosting AI models locally in India, particularly at its new three-gigawatt data center in Gujarat, which would be one of the largest of its kind globally. This facility could provide the infrastructure needed to run AI models securely while addressing data protection concerns for businesses.

The potential partnership highlights the increasing interest in leveraging AI in India’s rapidly expanding digital economy, with Reliance’s vast network playing a key role in facilitating AI adoption across industries.
